Zika virus – another reason to dislike mosquitoes!
While I’d like to think I’m omniscient and
try my best to get my son and husband to think so, sadly I am not.   One of the last blogs in 2015, All
I Want For Christmas
, talked about the WHO’s list of emerging pathogens
that are likely to cause severe outbreaks in the near future, which few or
no medical countermeasures exist.  WHO’s
prescient warning included Zika virus.
I’m sure back in December I would harbour a guess that most people
outside of the public health and infection prevention realm would not have
known what Zika virus was.  Today, based
on the fact that a Google search gave about 118,000,000 hits in under 0.6
seconds, I would say that the number of people who know about Zika virus has
grown exponentially.

Do you know who cleans your Clinical Workstations?

One of the common questions during many of the presentations
that I give
is asking if you know who cleans what.  As you’d likely suspect, the answers vary
significantly.
  The reason I call this
out as an important consideration for your infection prevention program is to
remind everyone that our jobs are not done once we have chosen what we think
the optimal disinfectant is, and this I know for fact.

CCM = Clear, Compelling and Memorable
At the sight of the letters "CCM", those of you
who are old enough may initially have leapt to CCR (Credence
Clearwater Revival
); particularly if you’re following The Voice and
watching John
Fogerty
work with “Adam
Levine
” (interpret the quotation marks as dreamy teenage googly eyes...or
as in my case dreamy unteenager...).  CCM
is something coined by my CEO.  It is a
concept that he challenges everyone at our company with.  Whether we are writing a blog, creating marketing
materials, writing a report on an open innovation project or giving a
presentation, we are expected to deliver our message(s) in a way that is clear
so that the reader or listener understands what we are talking about, compelling
so that they want to take action and use the information that has been provided
and memorable
so that they can easily recall what they learned and share it with others.

Hand Sanitizer: Friend or Foe??

For my ICP friends you may be wondering what the heck I’m
thinking considering hand sanitizers as a foe when we know the importance of
hand hygiene in stopping the spread of disease.
Nothing is more evident than the importance of frequently washing
your hands in the first week back to school.
For those in my neck of the woods we are 8 days back to school.  Eight measly days and my 6.5 yr old has his
first cold (runny nose, cough and “frog” in this throat).  Great.
Just Great.

Book Report - The Viral Storm: The Dawn of a New Pandemic Age
Some may have realized that I missed posting a blog last
week. I admit, it was not until Saturday morning when I awoke in a panic that I
realized I had not written one.  But I
decided to give myself some slack - I was on vacation.  I was enjoying the warm weather, doing the
last minute back to school shopping and taking a bit of time for myself to
lounge in the sun while listening to the soothing sounds of the river and the
not so soothing sounds of my son and his friends playing.  I also managed to get some vacation-reading
in – some that was completely mindless drivel and some like Nathan Wolfe’s The
Viral Storm, which was more educational and helped repopulate the brain cells I
lost from reading the drivel...

How full is your bucket?
I admit there are times I get a “bit” riled up but to be
fair, sometimes I get riled up because some people
find it amusing to “push my buttons”.  I
will also openly admit there some topics that I am passionate about, probably
to the point of being a zealot. Tonight I was flipping through my latest copy
of Infection Control Today when I came across an article written by the editor
Kelly Pyrek “Room
Turnover Times: Trash-and-Dash Approach Jeopardizes Patient Outcomes
”. One
a scale of 1 to 10 in terms of having strong feelings and opinions over
cleaning of patient rooms, I am about an 11, and just reading the title started
to make me quiver.
